Mercedes has introduced a flagship, a killer of Tesla: What to expect from the new EQS

Mercedes has finally unveiled the long-awaited electric version of its flagship S-Class luxury sedan. And that’s throwing the gauntlet at Elon Musk.

EQS is the first in the Mercedes-Benz family built on a special platform for electric vehicles, which itself was built by the giant from scratch. It will be sold in Europe and the United States from August, then in China in January.

The differences between the EQS and the S-Class are not just in terms of drive and platform. The whole electric car looks “strange” in the context of the luxury limousines of the manufacturer of this family, as the car has the shortest front cover of all S-classes ever produced. In addition, the focus is significantly on aerodynamics, as the whole car, especially in profile, looks like a giant curve.

Face to face, the EQS also does not look like the S-Class. In contrast, the electric car turns its back on the giant grille, which is extremely close visually to its electric “brothers” EQC and EQA. Above it is the daylight, in the form of a giant line extending along the entire length of the “lattice”. Here again, the manufacturer relies on the technological look instead of the style.

The same goes for the stop, which extends from end to end of the buttocks. This is reminiscent of the Maybach S-Class versions of the turn of the century. Today, however, it looks like a borrowing from the Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT.

The most drastic visual difference, however, comes in the interior. While the steering wheel between the S-Class and EQS is identical, the dashboard has been completely changed. While in the limousine with internal combustion engine we have a center console with a huge touchscreen, in the electric car the whole front panel is divided between three giant touchscreens. Yes, the passenger now has his own space for entertainment. With it, the EQS looks like one of the most futuristic electric cars available for purchase ever.

Outside of visuals, the EQS will come standard with 19-inch wheels, and up to 22-inch wheels can be purchased as an option. Also optionally they can be two-tone with a color choice unique to the electric limousine.

The suspension is airy, as in the S-Class, which should ensure an extremely comfortable ride. In addition, the EQS can store the location of potholes or bumps in the road surface, as well as steep terrain and the electric car can lift itself as it passes through them.

The sound system is provided by Burmester and can be used to eliminate noise coming from the wind and tires in motion. Even so, the extremely well-quiet interior becomes even quieter.

For the engines, we have a basic version EQS 450+, which has only one electric motor, driving the rear wheels and generating power of 333 hp. It accelerates from 0 to 100 in 6.2 seconds, which is fast, but behind other competitors in the electricity market.

The larger engines (two of them) come with 523 hp. in EQS 580 4Matic. They accelerate from 0 to 100 in 4.3 seconds. Mercedes is also preparing an AMG version of the EQS, which will have 761 hp, as much as the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.

With the battery we have 108 kWh, with which the mileage will be 770 km – significantly more than the Porsche Taycan S, but below the announced mileage of 836 km. of the Tesla Model S Plaid Plus. Here it is important to note that the data announced by Tesla often differ from reality.

EQS will be able to charge super-fast charging stations of 200 kW, which will increase its mileage by about 250 km in 15 minutes. The question will be to find such a powerful charger, which is rare in Europe at the moment. At home and with a charger with a power of 11 kW, full charging will take 5 hours. You can pay extra for a charger of 22 kW, which halves the charging time.

“We set the bar very high with this car,” said Daimler CEO Ola Kalenius. “Customers in this segment expect a combination of high-tech innovation and modern luxury, and that’s what we’re trying to achieve with EQS.”

Daimler has not yet disclosed prices for EQS. They will be famous in the summer.
