Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says that he would not participate in Formula 1 if he did not believe that the deficit to Red Bull Racing could be corrected within a few seasons.
Earlier this season, Red Bull Racing captured the second constructors’ championship in two years in Japan, while Max Verstappen was crowned three-time Formula 1 world champion in Qatar. The formation from Milton Keynes has won 32 of the past 36 races, and has only been defeated in Singapore this season. Mercedes is again having a difficult season, in which they cannot fight for victories. The German superpower’s last victory dates back to November 2022, when George Russell crossed the line first in Brazil.

Find three or four tenths
New engine regulations will be introduced in Formula 1 in 2026, offering an opportunity to overhaul the rankings. However, Wolff believes that the gap to Red Bull Racing can be closed sooner, despite the large backlog: “I wouldn’t be in this sport if I didn’t believe it was possible,” he says in conversation with Gazetta. “If you look at how much Aston Martin grew last winter or the step McLaren took in the summer… If we can find three or four tenths we will be back in the game.”
Wolff optimistic
The Austrian continues: “We know that our car can do more than we have shown so far. We have not yet been able to understand how to get the most out of it, but that gives us a reason to be optimistic .” In addition to seeing opportunities in the next two years, Wolff is also optimistic about 2026. He sees it as a great challenge to work with power sources that are half thermal and half electric: “There are rumors that there is a risk that single seaters will become too slow, but different aerodynamic approaches need to be studied. Are the engineers saying the new rules are catastrophic? The answer is: come up with some ideas.”
