Such a solution with a special external lighting solution will be used to signal to other road users that the vehicle is operating in automated driving mode with “Drive Pilot” activated.
German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has become the first carmaker in the world to receive US approval for special marker lights for automated driving in the states of California and Nevada.
The turquoise color in the front and rear lights, position lights and their backup exterior mirror housings is intended to indicate to other road users or the police that the vehicle is operating in Level 3 automated driving mode with Drive Pilot activated.
The turquoise color for this solution was chosen as a result of research and surveys. Mercedes claims that such a color is highly visible and easily distinguishable from the lights and traffic lights of other vehicles. The company said it hopes to help standardize turquoise marker lights for use in production cars around the world.
