After Germany, Mercedes‑Benz has also received level 3 approval for the Drive Pilot for highly automated driving in the state of California. The system is expected to be available there as an option in the S-Class and the EQS from the end of the year. The US state of Nevada had previously confirmed that the Drive Pilot also complies with the regulations applicable there.
Drive Pilot makes it possible to hand over the task of driving to the system under certain conditions when there is heavy traffic or traffic jams on suitable sections of the Autobahn in Germany (up to 60 km/h) or on freeways in the USA (up to 40 mph). As soon as the requirements for highly automated driving are met, the system displays the availability on two buttons on the steering wheel rim. After activation, the Drive Pilot regulates the speed and distance to the vehicle in front and guides the vehicle within the lane. The course of the route, events on the route and traffic signs are evaluated and taken into account. The system also reacts to unexpected traffic situations and deals with them independently, for example by evasive maneuvers within the lane or by braking manoeuvres.
Lewvel 3 allows you to take your hands off the handlebars and your eyes off the road. However, should the system require it, the driver must be able to take control of the car again within a certain period of time. If this does not happen, Drive Pilot initiates an automatic emergency stop after ten seconds and switches on the hazard warning lights. As soon as the vehicle has come to a standstill, the Mercedes‑Benz emergency call system is activated. The vehicle also unlocks doors to make it easier for first responders to access the interior.
By the end of the decade, Mercedes-Benz wants to enable highly automated driving on the Autobahn at speeds of up to 130 km/h. As an interim step, Mercedes-Benz wants to offer its customers in Germany an expansion stage that will enable them to follow a driver ahead on the autobahn at speeds of up to around 90 km/h in a highly automated manner.
