Mercedes-Benz has presented an electric version of its G-Wagen SUV. Let’s find out how the flagship car has changed and whether the new product will be replaced by gasoline and diesel engines.
The new G 580 EQ looks a little different from its predecessors: only the structure of the hood and the radiator grill have changed slightly, while the overall shape remains unchanged.
“Electronic” equipped four individually controlled electric motors – they are integrated directly into the frame and develop a maximum power of 432 kW with 1164 Nm of torque. The charge of a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 116 kW / h is enough for 473 kilometers (in mixed mode), and a low center of gravity, protected from water and dirt, as well as G-TURN and G-STEERING technologies allow it the new product to move with confidence over rough terrain.
It should be noted that, especially for the G 580 EQ, the company has developed G-ROAR technology, which imitates the sounds of classic engines. Mercedes has also equipped the electric car with a 12.3-inch central display with touch controls, as well as a “transparent hood” function that improves visibility using cameras – this solution will certainly appeal to driving fans off road.
However, the maximum speed of the electric G-Wagen is limited to 180 km / h, which is an order of magnitude lower than its classic counterpart. In contrast, the G 63 with V8 engines could reach 210 km/h, and the G65 with V12 an impressive 230 km/h for this class.
It will be interesting to see how the G 580 EQ and subsequent modifications perform in real use. However, it is hardly worth expecting the same stability from new products as the classic G-Wagen models show.
