The program “Tavs Auto TV” of the studio “RJ76 Films” traveled with this futuristic limousine together with her husband, who during his life has managed to play music in several groups (“Zvaigznīte”, “Modo”, “Opus” and others); managing one of the largest commercial radio stations and taking care of the development of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet for six years. Composer Zigmars Liepiņš (together with Māra Zālīti) is also the author of the legendary rock opera “Lāčplēsis” created during the Revival, which will have a new production this summer.
“EQS” is the most technologically advanced car that “Mercedes-Benz” ever created. The large displays literally cover the entire front panel, and they’re not just there for beauty. Both the navigation system and its additional options, as well as the 360-degree camera, which raises this option to a new level, deserve praise. The animations it can project by stitching together the images from all the cameras are almost unbelievable. And it would be impolite to even talk about such things as the quality of finishing – it is simply at a level corresponding to the flagship of “Mercedes-Benz”.
The test car of the program is “Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4Matic”. It is equipped with two electric motors – one in the front and the other in the back, so this car has all-wheel drive. The total system power is 330 kW or 449 hp. The torque reaches an impressive 828 newton meters. The car can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. And yes, the price of this richly equipped test car is 169,000 euros… In total, the “EQS” is offered to buyers in four power versions (from 333 to 523 hp) and is also available with single-axle wheel drive.
While working on the design of this car, one of the main tasks was to create a desirable limousine with a maximally low drag coefficient – “EQS” it is 0.20. This makes this over five meter long limousine the most aerodynamic production car in the world.
The front part of the car does not have a classic radiator grill – electric cars do not need it, because the engine does not need to be cooled – and this fact also reduces air resistance. But the smaller it is, the greater the distance the car can travel on a single charge. According to the manufacturer, depending on the version, “EQS” can travel up to 741 kilometers on a single charge.
Thanks to the electric drive and the fact that it is no longer necessary to house a huge internal combustion engine under the hood of this car, the cabin of the “EQS” is much more spacious than that of classic sedans, so the second row of seats of this car can stretch your legs thoroughly. Also, the moment you open the trunk of this car, it is clear that it is actually not a sedan, but a liftback.
The ride of this car is particularly comfortable – it almost levitates above the road surface, allowing you to enjoy a surprisingly quiet and comfortable ride. “EQS” is already equipped with an adaptive pneumatic suspension as standard. In addition, in order to improve the handling of the car and reduce the turning radius of the car, the axle of the rear wheels touches it – depending on the version from 4.5 to even 10 degrees. When standing still or driving slowly and turning the steering wheel to the right, the rear axle turns to the left, making parking maneuvers easier. On the other hand, at higher driving speeds, both axles turn in the same direction, improving the car’s stability in turns.
Did you know that the “Mercedes-Benz” logo – a three-pointed star – symbolizes the company’s efforts to achieve worldwide motorization? On the other hand, each ray of this star represents its element – land, sea and air – the environment where this company once wanted to dominate with its manufactured engines. Today, with the new fully electric “EQS”, perhaps this logo has acquired an additional meaning – not to dominate, but to protect and take care of all these elements.
