Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Lewis Hamilton have announced the signing of a contract for the 2021 season. For Lewis and Mercedes, this is the ninth season together, in Mercedes the Briton has won six championship titles – this is the most successful partnership in the history of Formula 1.
A significant part of the new contract is dedicated to the joint pursuit of greater diversity and inclusiveness in motorsport, which will translate into a joint philanthropic foundation.
Lewis Hamilton: “I am delighted to be spending my ninth season with my Mercedes colleagues. Our team has worked together to achieve incredible achievements, and now we are preparing to build on this success, while trying to do better and better both on the track and off.
I am equally determined to continue what I started and for the sake of future generations to make motorsport more diverse. I am grateful that Mercedes is very supportive in this.
I am proud that this year we will make additional efforts and establish a foundation that will address the challenges of diversity and inclusion in our sport. I am inspired that together we can achieve so much and I can’t wait to get back to work in March. “
Toto Wolff, CEO and Team Leader: “Lewis and I have always agreed that we will continue to cooperate, but 2020 was a very unusual year, because of this, the negotiation process was delayed.
Together we decided to extend our sporting relationship for another season and take the next step in our quest to make sport more diverse, for which we are starting a long-term project.
Lewis’ accomplishments are among the most significant in the world of sports, and we also value him as an ambassador for our brand and our partner companies. Over the past eight seasons, Mercedes and Lewis have written their chapter in the books on the history of Formula 1, and now we really want to add new pages to it. “
Marcus Schaefer, non-executive chairman of the board of directors: “We are very pleased to keep the most successful Formula 1 driver on the most successful team. Lewis is not only incredibly talented – he is constantly working to achieve more. His desire is shared by the whole team, which is why their collaboration has become so successful.
In addition, Lewis is not indifferent to what is happening around him, he cares about the world around him and wants to change it. Mercedes-Benz shares this responsibility and is proud of the commitment it has made to create a new joint fund to improve diversity in motorsport. The openness of sport to people from under-represented groups is very important for its development, we are determined to contribute to this ”.
