Mercedes-AMG takes Porsche’s Ring record

The same driver and the same car on the same Nürburgring Nordschleife. Still, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S 4-Door Coupé went more than two seconds faster than in 2018. Why is that?

In 2018, the development driver Demian Schaffert was driven Mercedes-AMG GT 63S 4-Door Coupé 4Matic+ the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in a time of 7.25,41. And that was enough to crown itself the Fastest Series-Produced Four-Seater on the Ring. Now two years later, Schaffert and Mercedes-AMG are attempting a new record attempt, shaving 2.3 seconds off their lap time. More importantly, in this way they took back the sharper Ring record from the Porsche Panamera Turbo S earlier this year.

Mercedes-AMG cannot attribute that time saving to the extra power, because the GT 63S 4-Door Coupé remains 639 hp and 900 Nm strong. And neither the weather conditions nor the helmsman’s talent were performance-enhancing factors. Yet the new Ring record is now 7.23.09. Thanks to the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires and the optional Aero body package, which lowers air resistance and increases stability at higher speeds.
