The automaker is said to have used F1-derived technologies, making the new Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance the most powerful version of the S-Class to date.
Mercedes presented the top version of its flagship, the Mercedes-AMG S-Class with S63 E Performance engine. And while the C-Class has lost half its cylinders and volume with the new generation, the S-Class remains faithful to the biturbo eight-cylinder, whose capabilities are further boosted by electrification.
The basis of the drive system is once again a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, which, like the previous generation after the facelift, delivers maximum output of 450 kW (612 hp) and 900 Nm torque. However, the electric motor of the E Performance plug-in hybrid system, located at the rear axle, adds up to 140 kW (190 hp) and 320 Nm of torque.
The system output thus reaches a maximum of 590 kW (802 hp) and 1430 Nm of torque, thanks to which the car with an unladen weight of almost 2.6 tons should accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3, 3 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but can optionally be increased to 290 km/h.
It is worth adding to the electric motor on the rear axle that the maximum power is 140 kW, while the continuous power is 70 kW. The electric motor is integrated with a two-speed gearbox and an electronically controlled limited slip differential. The nine-speed AMG Speedshift transmission is traditionally responsible for processing the power of the internal combustion engine.
The electric motor is powered by the powerful AMG HPB 150 battery with a capacity of 13.1 kWh, located above the rear axle. The battery should provide a pure electric range of up to 33 kilometers and is equipped as standard with an on-board battery charger with a power of 3.7 kW for recharging from a socket or wall box. However, the car also offers four recovery levels (Level 0 – 3), thanks to which the battery can be continuously recharged while driving.
It probably goes without saying that the car is equipped with an all-wheel drive system. In addition, it also offers a reinforced body with increased rigidity, air suspension with electromechanical stabilizers, adaptive dampers, a rear-axle steering system, carbon ceramic brakes and other standard details that promise maximum comfort and dynamic driving.
But the exterior has also been changed. The automaker boasts that for the first time the AMG S-Class has received a specific radiator grille with vertical slats and a large star in the centre. The automaker has also traditionally adapted the shapes of the front bumper, which was supposed to be inspired by the shapes of a jet-wing and features enlarged air intakes on the sides.
For example, the 21″ AMG forged wheels or the AMG-specific sill extensions will impress you from the profile. At the rear, we see a distinctive diffuser or a pair of twin tailpipes of the exhaust system. However, there is also the appropriate designation AMG S 63. The top version of the flagship thus elegantly combines extreme performance with luxury and elegance. This is also clearly visible when looking into the cabin.
The four-seater interior will offer specially upholstered seats with more pronounced lateral guidance and seams, AMG logos on the armrests or the MBUX infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster with specific AMG graphics and unique, performance-focused displays. There is a new AMG steering wheel with rotary selectors for recovery and driving modes. It goes without saying that a wide variety of safety and assistance systems come as standard, thanks to which even the most powerful S-class remains a spacious and comfortable companion on any journey.
