AMG versions of the new Mercedes GLC debuted last summer, but then only cars with a basic station wagon body were shown. Today, coupe-like variants are officially presented, differing only in body shape. The second-generation GLC Coupe model itself appeared in the spring. As with the “regular” GLC, the coupe-like AMG crossover is offered in two versions – the entry-level GLC 43 and the most extreme GLC 63 SE Performance. And they don’t have V6 or V8 engines.
Under the hood, the “forty-third” has a two-liter M139l turbo-four with a turbine of a very clever design: it has an electric motor powered by a 48-volt power supply. It spins up to 175 thousand revolutions per minute and starts working immediately at the command of the electronics, accelerating the compressor wheel, minimizing the effect of “turbo lag”. There is also a starter-generator that provides an additional 14 hp. while moving. Peak power of the power plant is 421 hp, torque is 500 Nm. The rated acceleration time to 100 km/h is 4.8 s, the maximum speed is limited to 250 km/h.
The power unit of the older “sixty-third” model is more complex. Here the same M139l turbo-four is boosted to 476 hp, and a 204 hp electric traction motor is installed on the rear axle, interlocked with a separate two-speed transmission. The maximum power of the power plant is 680 hp, torque 865 Nm. The traction battery has a nominal capacity of 6.1 kWh, of which 4.8 kWh is available. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 3.5 seconds, top speed is electronically limited to 275 km/h.
Both supercrossovers are equipped with a nine-speed planetary AMG Speedshift MCT 9G automatic transmission with a wet clutch instead of a torque converter. The AMG GLC 43 Coupe model has permanent all-wheel drive, but the “sixty-third” has a plug-in drive, with a clutch on the front axle. Both cars have adaptive spring suspension and a fully controlled chassis, and the GLC 63 is also standardly equipped with active stabilizers that operate from a 48-volt electrical system. The front brakes have six-piston calipers, the rear brakes have single-piston calipers.
Prices for powerful coupe-shaped crossovers and the timing of their release to the market have not yet been announced. The “regular” Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 in Germany now costs from 86,870 euros, and the GLC 63 from 121,856 euros. It can be assumed that versions with the Coupe prefix will be slightly more expensive.
