Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance: The Most Powerful Serial Four-Cylinder Engine in the World

However, the two-liter engine developed directly by AMG is very interesting from a technical point of view. For supercharging, it uses an electrically driven turbocharger that can spin up to 175,000 revolutions per minute without delay. It is said to be a solution directly derived from the system developed by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 racing team.

A weaker version of the sharp SUV is called the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic and it is a mild-hybrid, so the four-cylinder is supplemented by a starter-generator. The two-liter engine alone provides a respectable maximum output of 310 kW (421 hp) and a maximum torque of 500 Nm, while the starter-generator can add another 10 kW (13 hp) and 150 Nm for a short time at lower speeds.

The car has all-wheel drive, a nine-speed automatic transmission, adaptive air suspension and rear axle steering.

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance offers interesting plug-in hybrid technology with the most powerful serial four-cylinder engine on the planet. But it is also interesting to look at, it differs from the standard GLC with a more prominent body kit.

The more powerful Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance is a plug-in hybrid, so the combustion engine is assisted by an electric motor. Under the front hood, as in the case of the GLC 43, there is a two-liter four-cylinder turbocharged with an electrically driven turbocharger, but it is tuned to a maximum output of 350 kW (476 hp) and a maximum torque of 545 Nm. Mercedes claims it is the most powerful production four-cylinder engine in the world.

And then there’s the aforementioned electric motor. It is located on the rear axle, where it is integrated into one box together with the two-speed gearbox (designed specifically for the electric motor) and the self-locking differential. The electric motor provides 150 kW (204 hp). The system power reaches 500 kW (680 hp), the torque then 1,020 Nm. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 275 km/h.

There is also a battery with a capacity of 6.1 kWh above the rear axle. It is charged via a 3.7 kW on-board charger and is said to be sufficient for a range of up to 12 kilometers in electric mode. Its main task is to store energy from driving and use it to strengthen thrust during sporty driving. How effectively it actually works remains to be seen.

The GLC 63 S E Performance also received a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, but it is handled differently than in the GLC 43. The variable four-wheel drive can send up to 100 percent of the driving force to the rear wheels. Again, there is an adaptive air suspension and rear axle steering.

Cars also differ in brakes. While the weaker AMG relies on four-piston calipers and 370mm discs at the front and single-piston calipers and 360mm discs at the rear, the more powerful and heavier GLC 63 S E Performance gets six-piston calipers and 390mm discs at the front and single-piston calipers and 370mm discs at the rear.

Both AMG variants boast various sports accessories and a sporty interior. The weaker GLC 43 should go on sale this year, the plug-in hybrid 63 will arrive next year. We don’t know the prices yet.

How do you like AMG’s four-cylinder GLC?

A four-cylinder doesn’t matter when it delivers such huge power.

I’d rather have an honest eight cylinder.
