At the 2021 Munich Motor Show (HERE all the news) was born first fully electric Mercedes AMG. In fact, the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+, a car that offers luxury and comfort of the EQS that we have already got to know and the very high performance of the powertrain which was developed directly by AMG. The prices have not yet been disclosed but, of course, they will be higher than those of the current electric flagship of the German brand. It will arrive over the next few months. Let’s see all the main details.

DESIGN AND INTERIORS

The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + is recognizable for some dedicated details such as the AMG-specific Black Panel radiator grille with vertical chrome strips, integrated Mercedes star and “AMG” lettering. In addition, the front bumper is painted in the same color as the bodywork. Then we have the front apron in the typical AMG A-Wing design, painted in high-gloss black with a chrome trim element.

Speaking of aerodynamics, the AMG technicians have optimized several details without introducing a specific aerodynamic kit for this model. After all, the EQS can already boast aerodynamics with a CX of 0.23. We find, however, a larger rear spoiler than that of the AMG Line to improve the dynamic qualities. Small changes also to the rear diffuser with six longitudinal fins. The wheels are 21 or 22 inches and are all aerodynamically optimized.

The sporty look, however, can be accentuated on request through a series of packages. The customer can, for example, choose the AMG Night package with dark chrome elements, red painted brake calipers, AMG carbon trim elements and AMG seat upholstery in nappa leather with a specific graphic motif. Speaking of the interior, the setting is that of the EQS with some specific details typical of AMG to make the design more sporty.

For example, we find AMG seats with a specific graphic pattern and special upholstery in ARTICO material with MICROCUT microfibre and red contrast stitching. Then we have the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather, flattened at the bottom and perforated at the handle with silver-colored aluminum paddles for setting the different levels of recovery, in addition to the standard AMG steering wheel buttons, the AMG sports pedals , dashboard and belt lines in ARTICO space gray material with NEOTEX knurling and red decorative stitching and AMG floor mats and door sills with “AMG” lettering.

On the technology front we find di serie l’MBUX Hyperscreen with AMG-specific functions and displays.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE



The real novelty concerns, of course, the powertrain, consisting of two electric motors (synchronous with permanent magnets). The traction, therefore, is integral (4MATIC +). Overall, there are 484 kW (658 hp) and 950 Nm of torque available. Excellent performance as the car is able to reach a top speed of 220 km / h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds. A “curious” note on the acceleration data: Mercedes AMG declares that this time can be reached when the battery is at least 80% of capacity.

With the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, the maximum power in RACE START mode with booster function rises up to 560 kW (761 CV). The maximum torque of the electric motors here increases up to 1,020 Nm top speed rises to 250 km / h (electronically limited) and the time to sprint from 0 to 100 km / h drops to 3.4 seconds. The battery has a capacity of 107.8 kWh and can be recharged in direct current up to a power of 200 kW (11/22 kW in alternating current depending on the charger installed).

The declared autonomy, according to the WLTP cycle, is 526-580 km. The all-wheel drive distributes the drive torque variably between the front and rear axles according to the driving situation: compared to a mechanical all-wheel drive, the electrical system ensures even faster reactions. The torque is checked 10,000 times per minute and changed as needed. The car also has 4-wheel steering. The suspension has been revised and optimized to meet the needs of AMG customers.

Keeping the power of the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + at bay are the high-performance AMG composite brakes, with six-piston calipers and 415x33mm discs at the front and single-piston calipers and 378x22mm rear discs. The carbon ceramic plant is available on request.
