Relegated to Ligue 2 after a disastrous season, AS Saint-Étienne will part with many players at the end of their contract. But one of them could well continue the adventure with the Greens: Romain Hamouma.
ASSE sank last Sunday, losing on penalties against Auxerre in the return play-offs (2-2, 4-5 on pens). Leaving the top flight for the first time since 2004, some players end their adventure with the Greens in the worst possible way. This is particularly the case of Wahbi Khazri (37 goals, 14 assists in 114 games with ASSE), Arnaud Nordin (18 goals and 10 assists in 148 games), or even Denis Bouanga (28 goals and 15 assists in 109 games). But another offensive element, however announced on the departure could well remain: Romain Hamouma.
At the end of the contract on June 30, the 35-year-old Stéphanois striker, author of two goals and an assist this season in Ligue 1, could extend.
Sole survivor of the last Etienne trophy
The man with 62 goals and 48 assists in 321 games for the Greens is about to sign a new one-year contract. Indeed, according to information from the regional newspaper Le Progrès, the player would like to stay at the club, which also wishes to extend it. Discussions are said to be underway and an agreement could quickly be reached.
At the club since the summer of 2012, Romain Hamouma is the only player in the squad to have known the last coronation of the Greens, during the 2013 League Cup. If he has played very little this season, he nevertheless scored the crucial goal which allowed the Greens to grab a play-off place during the final day of Ligue 1 in Nantes (1-1). Recognized as the Saint-Etienne hero that evening, he will therefore have the opportunity to save his club once again in the event of an extension.
