Mercadona donates 15 tons of basic necessities to the Food Band of Tenerife | Radio Club Tenerife

Mercadona, a company of physical supermarkets and online sales, has delivered fifteen tons of staple products to the Tenerife Food Bank (BANCOTEIDE) today, such as rice, meatballs, sausages, tuna, biscuits or gofio fruit, as a result of the chain’s firm commitment to be at the side of the most disadvantaged groups, a task that has been reinforced as a result of the health and economic crisis.

The donation is part of the collaboration agreement that they have renewed this morning in order for the food to be distributed among the different non-profit entities benefiting from the Food Bank and reach the final consumer in perfect condition.

Hernán Cerón, President of the Food Bank of Tenerife, appreciates “this help that will allow us to continue with our charitable activity of distributing basic food to disadvantaged families in our province, and more so taking into account the supply difficulties that we are experiencing due to of COVID-19 “.

On the other hand, the supermarket company has begun this month of May daily collaboration with the distribution entities San Vicente de Paul (San Pío X Group) and Valle de La Orotava County Assembly (Red Cross) through the delivery of products of staples such as fruit and vegetables, dairy, meat, fish, sausage, bread or pasta.

Donations are made first thing in the morning from Monday to Friday, from the supermarkets closest to the centers. The products, which are suitable for consumption but not for sale, are delivered in the best conditions of quality and food safety.

Jorge Pérez, Director of External Relations in Tenerife and Institutional Relations of the Canary Islands, highlighted that “the situation of exceptionality that we are experiencing is very changing and requires agility in our decisions with a single objective: to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable people in a situation of extraordinary complexity like the one we are experiencing ”.

A sustainable social action policy in Mercadona’s CSR strategy

Mercadona maintains a social commitment with the residents of the areas in which it is present and active. In the case of the Canary Islands, during 2020, due to the economic and social crisis, its donations increased by 63% until it delivered a total of 780 tons of food to the different charities and soup kitchens on the islands with which it already collaborated regularly.

Specifically in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the company collaborates with the Food Bank, the Red Cross, Cáritas and with ten soup kitchens, nine on the island of Tenerife and one on La Palma.
