Mercadito de Libros y Zines: Promoting Reading and Community Engagement in Morelia, Michoacán

Morelia, Michoacán (OEM-Infomex).- To promote reading, the Mercadito de Libros y Zines will open on July 15 at the café and independent engraving workshop Errante.

The organizer is the radio producer and promoter Ioshio Hernández, who mentioned in an interview that they seek to counteract the idea that books are expensive and put them within easy reach, both by selling and bartering.

So, everyone who wishes to bring items for sale, exchange or barter for products of equal value that the exhibitor considers is invited; such as books, zines, pins, crafts, stickers and graphic pieces in good condition.

It is a community space, because according to the promoter “with this premise is that Mercadito de Libros was born, with the experiences of making links, creating ties with active people and generating project proposals in the community and surrounding areas.”

The promoter said that this exchange began in Oaxaca together with the editor Jorge Plata and the bookbinder Eréndira Aragón. With them, he said, “we met by chance in Oaxaca and at some point we began to summon people to unite and make harmony with creators from the community.”

Then, he reported that the first event was held in San Pablo Villa de Mitla and the second in Etla, both in that state; while the third was taken by Jorge Plata to Cuernavaca, the fourth was done in Puerto Vallarta by Ioshio Hernández, who now sought to carry it out in Morelia.

The promoter mentioned that he will hold the Mercadito in Morelia because it is “a booming and effervescent point of creators and cultural actors; in addition, I have seen that there are many graphic artists, artisans and many young people as well.”
