/ world today news/ We, the undersigned members of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament, express our concern regarding the unacceptable attitude of the leadership of the BSP towards the newspaper “Duma”.
The issue was raised by journalists in the leftist newspaper with a letter dated December 2, signed by 30 people. In it, they talk about censorship, harassment and experiments that destroy the newspaper. A few days before the upcoming congress, the leadership of the BSP removed three of the most authoritative writers of the left-wing newspaper: Velislava Dureva, Veliana Hristova and Georgi Georgiev – journalists who, with their positions, have been creating the appearance of the daily newspaper for years. Veliana Hristova is also the chairman of the trade union organization in the editorial office.
“Duma” preserved the spirit and causes of the left in the difficult times of the transition. Prodev’s newspaper has always been a benchmark for honest, valuable journalism. The newspaper “Duma” never belonged to the leadership, even less to the leader of the BSP, but to the socialists and left-wing people in Bulgaria. So far, no leadership of the BSP has encroached on the editorial freedom of the journalists in the left-wing newspaper. With these actions, it undermines the long-standing pact of trust between journalists and readers of “Duma”.
The humiliating attitude, about which the journalists from the left-wing newspaper were alarmed, also coincides with the humiliating election results of the BSP in the last three parliamentary votes. Certainly the crisis in the “Duma” is an element of the general crisis in the party.
We, the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament, express our conviction that “Duma” belongs to left-wing Bulgaria and we express our solidarity with the large family of the newspaper, which includes the current and former journalists of the publication, as well as its loyal readers.
