/ world today news/ MEPs in the relevant parliamentary committee gave their consent to the creation of a European Border and Coast Guard, which will assist member states in protecting their borders in the event of increased migration pressure.
The document enters the European Parliament after several weeks of intense negotiations between MEPs, the European Commission and the Council of the EU. It is envisaged that the new Agency will be built on the already existing FRONTEX (the EU External Border Security Assistance Agency), which is located in Warsaw.
This is also a general success for the Bulgarian MEPs Iliana Yotova, Filiz Hyusmenova, Maria Gabriel and Emil Radev, who are members of the relevant Commission for Civil Liberties, Justice and Internal Affairs. They fought in the document for the Agency’s scope of action to be expanded and for it to be able to help not only at the borders of the Schengen member states, but also at the borders of countries such as Bulgaria and Croatia, which also face the risk of a strong refugee flow.
The management of the new Agency will be approved by the European Parliament, and it itself will have a permanent reserve for rapid action of 1,500 people. The plans are to include 40 Bulgarian employees among them.
The plenary session of the EP in Strasbourg is expected to approve on Wednesday with a large majority the creation of the Agency, which should be operational as soon as possible.
