Now a good distance from Roanne since its move to Ouches in 2017, Maison Troisgros is back in town. In the cinemas more precisely, with a documentary film which immerses the viewer in the daily life of the Troisgros family at Bois Sans Feuilles, the three-star restaurant nestled in the Roanne countryside. We see the patriarch Michel, his sons César and Léo, but also the women of the Troisgros family, the team members in the kitchen and in the dining room, the suppliers and the customers of this place classified among the very best restaurants in the world.

Frederick Wiseman, a nonagenarian American director, fell in love with the place and the cuisine served during a meal in 2020. To the point of asking César Troisgros to come back with his camera to bring Wood Without Leaves to the big screen. The Oscar-winning director will return in 2022 for seven weeks of filming, and will deliver a long-format documentary (3h58) which shows family cooking as “a workshop of great artists”. Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros has since toured festivals, from the Venice Film Festival to the LAFCA Awards in Los Angeles.

At the Activ microphone, César Troisgros looks back on this unique experience. He sees in Menus-Plaisirs “an ode to pleasure, to hospitality, to humanity and to teamwork, to working as a family”. The 37-year-old chef is satisfied with the results: “It shows all the complexity of our work. We appear demanding and rigorous in benevolence.

The eldest son of Michel Troisgros does not expect this film to have a boost for The Leafless Wood. “This is not a marketing operation. We’re just happy to have a memory that will remain at our disposal forever.”
