We would tend to forget it, but with 200,000 intramural trees to which are added the other 300,000 of the Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes, Paris is one of the most forested capitals in Europe. During the current term, the City plans to plant 170,000 new trees. Among these trees, nearly 200 are remarkable specimens belonging to 52 different species. Some are must-see.
Remarkable trees to see in Paris
- The oldest tree in Paris, the locust tree in Square Viviani
Planted in 1601 in the square René-Viviani, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, this locust tree is the oldest tree in the capital. The Paris City Hall website indicates that it is, in 2021, 15 meters high and 3.50 meters in circumference. Its trunk is so wide that its weight and that of the branches and leaves tilted it.
- Saint-Gervais elm, the tree of justice
The elm Saint-Gervais is located on the Saint-Gervais square, in front of the west facade of the Saint-Gervais church, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. An elm has existed here since the Middle Ages, but the current tree was planted in 1935.
- The Sequoia des Buttes-Chaumont, the most giant
In the Buttes-Chaumont park (19th arrondissement), stands a giant sequoia over 40 meters high and 4.70 meters in circumference. In California, its country of origin, the Sequoiadendron giganteum can reach considerable heights, up to 120 meters.
Also at Buttes-Chaumont, planted in 1873 by the lake, a Japanese sophora received in 2015 the national label, “Remarkable Tree of France”. At a height of 10 meters, it sports a greyish trunk with a circumference of 3.75 m and twisting branches that seem attracted by the water of the lake.
- The strongest: the oriental plane tree in Parc Monceau
Planted in 1814, it is one of the two remarkable trees of the Monceau park, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Its dimensions are impressive: a trunk 7 meters in circumference for a height of approximately 31 meters! We lend it an incredible longevity exceeding 1000 years …
- The cedar of the Jardin des Plantes
In 1734, Jussieu, famous botanist, brought back from England two plants of Cedar of Lebanon. Shortly before his arrival at Garden of plants of Paris, the pot of one of them broke. Never mind, Jussieu took his hat and put the young cedar shoot inside. Today, planted in the large labyrinth, this tree exceeds 20 meters.
