Mental health: the importance of recharging your batteries and consulting

The COVID-19 pandemic has considerably affected (and continues to shake up) the mental health of many individuals of all ages and from all backgrounds, in Quebec and elsewhere. Seniors, health professionals, parents, teachers, adolescents, workers… no one is immune!

From October 3 to 9, 2021 is Mental Illness Awareness Week. As part of this event, the Avant de Craquer Network is holding an awareness campaign reminding everyone of the importance of taking care of their psychological health.

How to recharge your batteries?

Taking care of your physical health means eating well, getting enough sleep, quitting smoking (or never starting), etc. However, to maintain morale and protect mental health, several strategies are recommended, for example:

Take a few weeks or days of vacation (ideally in nature) when you can really “drop out”;

Cultivate your social life by doing enjoyable activities in groups or with friends;

Engage in hobbies (writing, painting, music, etc.) that allow you to focus your attention on more than your worries.

When should we consult?

Don’t wait until you’re at the end of your rope to see a mental health professional. In particular, you should make an appointment if you experience symptoms related to your emotions and thoughts:

Loss of appetite;

Difficulty concentrating;

Feeling of being useless;

Excessive sensitivity to criticism;

Rapid heartbeat;

Back pain;

Headache;

Irritability;

Difficult nights (insomnia, frequent awakenings, etc.);

Heavy consumption (eg: alcohol, drugs, caffeine).
