There was already a collective wage increase of two times 2 percent for staff in mental health care centers, but now they also receive an inflation compensation. According to trade union FNV, there will be another 10 percent extra wage.
More than 100,000 employees in mental health care will receive extra pay increases in steps. This year there will be a 5 percent wage increase, on top of the previously agreed 2 percent. And next year there will be two wage increases of 2 percent and 5 percent.
The wages will rise the fastest for employees in the lowest salary class. According to trade union FNV, the salary for staff earning up to 2,000 euros will increase by 22.5 percent in two years. For salaries of 6,000 to 8,000 euros, the salary increase is somewhat smaller at 12.95 percent.
Elise Merlijn, director of FNV Zorg & Welzijn, speaks of difficult consultations with employers. According to her, the significant wage increase is really necessary because of the high inflation and the “compelling circumstances that mental health workers have to deal with”.
There is a major staff shortage in mental health care. At the beginning of 2023, there were 7,000 unfilled vacancies, twice as many as in 2018. In employee satisfaction surveys, only 73 percent say they are satisfied with their work.
