Often, those who have had COVID-19 complain of the so-called brain fog: forgetfulness, impaired concentration, difficulty with word selection.

Many also develop anxiety and depression. They reach their peak three months after recovery.

According to a new study conducted at the university, anxiety and depressive disorders after a cornavirus infection can develop, including in people who did not previously suffer from mental disorders.

According to the head of the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology at Sechenov University, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Marina Kinkulkina, many patients did not realize that they had clinical depression.

Patients did not turn to psychiatrists immediately, on average after another three months, – said the specialist.

She noted that patients complained of a loss of interest in their previous activities, problems with sleep, decreased ability to work, increased fatigue, loss of strength.

At the appointment with a psychiatrist, they were diagnosed with depressive and anxiety disorders, mostly of moderate severity, less often severe, – added Kinkulkina.

Another study of the Moscow State Medical University. Sechenov showed that over 50% of university fifth-year students who recovered from coronavirus infection complained of problems with concentration in the first three months after recovery and noted that they needed more effort and time to master the educational material in the same volume.

Within 6-12 months, in more than 80% of them, the severity of cognitive impairment significantly decreased.
