The final of the Australian Open awaits its protagonists, who will emerge from two stellar duels that will be played from the early hours of this Friday in Argentina.

The Serbian Novak Djokovic, world number one, will face the young Italian Jannik Sinner (4) in the first semi-final match at Melbourne Park, while the rival for the winner of that duel will come from the one next celebrated by the Russian Daniil Medvedev (3 ) and the German Alexander Zverev (6).

Djokovic, infallible in the semifinals in Australia

History shows that every time the Serbian Novak Djokovic got into the top four of the first Grand Slam of the year, he finished as champion.

The record also favors “Nole” over the Italian, whom they beat in four of the six opportunities in which they faced each other. Although there is a hopeful fact for Sinner: in two of the last three matches he won.

Furthermore, the Italian reaches the “semi” as the only tennis player who has not lost a set so far in the tournament.

Djokovic’s path to the semi-final included victories over Croatian Dino Prižmić, Australian Alexei Popyrin, Argentine Tomás Etcheverry, Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and American Taylor Fritz.

Sinner left the Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp and Jesper de Jong, the Argentine Sebastián Báez and the Russians Karen Kachanov and Andrey Rublev on the way to reach the semi-finals.

The confrontation between Djokovic and Sinner is scheduled for 12:30 a.m. this Friday in Argentina and can be seen on ESPN 2.

MEDVEDEV-ZVEREV, UNRELEASED SEMIFINAL IN A GRAND SLAM

On the other side of the four, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will meet for the first time in a Grand Slam, despite having met each other 18 times.

The record favors the Russian 11-7 and lately he was infallible against the German: he won five of the six meetings they had during 2023.

Both tennis players will need a great serve and risk more than necessary to avoid putting a strain on a physique damaged by the two five-set matches that each had in previous rounds.

Medvedev advanced to the semifinals at the expense of Frenchman Terence Atmane, Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, Portuguese Nuno Borges and Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

Zverev struck the blow by eliminating the second favorite, the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, in the quarterfinals. He had previously beaten his compatriot Dominik Koepfer, the Slovak Lukas Klein, the American Alex Michelsen and the British Cameron Norrie.

The second men’s semifinal is scheduled for 5:30 a.m. in Argentina this Friday, and can also be seen on ESPN 2.
