Men’s handball Euro: the Slovenians beat the Danes and can play for fifth place

Netherlands-Portugal 33-33

Even before the meeting, it was certain that the Dutch would remain in sixth and last place even if they won, so from this point of view, this match was without stakes for them. The Portuguese couldn’t get the semi-final position either, but Paulo Fidalgo’s team was still in the fight for the fifth place.

The battle ended in a 33-33 draw, with Martim Costa and Luís Frade scoring eight goals each for the Portuguese, while Rutger ten Velde scored seven for the Dutch.

The Portuguese lost a valuable point, because a victory would have made the match for fifth place mathematically certain. So they had to wait for the Danish-Slovenian battle, in which the Slovenians could overtake the Portuguese only if they won.

Slovenia-Denmark 28-25

The paper form promised a Danish success, but since the Nordics had already secured first place in the group, they did not have to win at all costs. That is why the Slovenians seized the opportunity and scored a three-goal victory, primarily led by Kristjan Horzen, who scored six goals.
