The video that circulates on social media is less than two minutes (here we publish an excerpt of that video, edited), but its impact lasts much longer. It starts with a naked woman walking by the road, followed by several men dressed in uniforms from the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) of Mozambique. One of them, with a red backpack on his back, approaches and violently beats her with a stick. The woman screams in pain, tries to protect herself, staggers, the men insist that she keep walking, one of them shoots to scare her. Few steps she can take when hit by a machine gun blast.
The video has been circulating on social media in Mozambique since Monday and has attracted a lot of indignation, even leading the SDS to issue a statement condemning the act committed by “a group of individuals wearing military uniforms”.
“The Defense and Security Forces (FDS) consider the images shocking, abusive, disgusting, horrifying and, above all, condemnable in all their dimensions”, says the statement, which reaffirms the “commitment to protect human rights” of the SDS, not agreeing to the Mozambican military institution “with any barbaric act that substantiates the violation of human rights”.
