Memory of the victims of the pandemic

Bern, 03.03.2021 – On March 5 of last year, the first person in Switzerland died of Covid-19. The pandemic has claimed many victims to this day. This Friday, on the anniversary, we can commemorate them. Federal President Guy Parmelin invites you to observe a minute’s silence. After that, church bells will ring across the country.

The pandemic has been shaking the world for a year. Switzerland has also paid a high price: over 9,000 people have died as a result of Covid-19. Many sick people suffer from long-term effects. And thousands have lost their jobs and at times also lost hope.

In memory of the victims of the pandemic and also in gratitude to everyone who made personal sacrifices to overcome the crisis, Federal President Guy Parmelin would like to invite all residents of Switzerland to a moment of reflection. On this Friday, March 5th, 2021, many people in the country will pause at 11:59 a.m. and observe a minute’s silence. The three regional churches will then ring the church bells at 12:00 p.m. to commemorate them together.

The minute’s silence shouldn’t just be a moment of mourning. The commemoration should also set a sign to draw strength from the expressed solidarity, friendship and consolation and to look ahead. Because this is the only way we will master the current crisis.
