A study on experimental animals at Kyoto University revealed that memory can be erased. In the study, which is still in the experimental stage, for the first time, he used a chemical to erase his near-term memory.
Providing information about this research, which may be an important development in the medical world, Neurology Specialist Dr. Oğuzhan Onultan said, “The memory center in our brain is a region we call the ‘hippocampus’. In this research, they combined the ‘cophyllin’ substance, which is used in the region that provides nerve communication to the experimental animals in the hippocampus, with a substance called ‘supernova’ that glows when light is given, and injected them into the brains of the animals using adenovirus carrier. They then shined a light on the animals’ eyes. The substance called ‘Supernova’ spreads oxygen around and breaks down other chemicals. The reason they use adenovirus as a carrier is that it is an innocent virus. With this technology, it has been looked at; In any case, what the experimental animals learned is completely erased the next day after this process. They give tasks to mice, but these are deleted,” he said.
Noting that sleeping after learning something causes a mechanism that strengthens our memory, Onultan said, “For this reason, I recommend students to go to sleep after studying. Because this situation leaves long-term permanence. But here; It has been observed that even if the mice sleep, they forget the tasks and movements they have recorded in their memory.

Stating that the study is still in the stage of animal experiments, Onultan said, “Researchers also humorously expressed that they did this study by taking an example from the movie ‘Men in Black’. There, too, the memory is erased by the light source. There will be such studies and researches. During wars and pandemics, medical advances are accelerating. Therefore, with the advancement of technology and the adaptation of medical technology to this situation, many new developments should be prepared.

Saying that erasing memory is an interesting beginning in medicine, Onultan said, “On the one hand, some pathologies occur in the hippocampus through cofilin, in Alzheimer’s, psychiatric diseases, and especially in schizophrenia. This is because the cells there cannot communicate. Therefore, we can say that there will be a significant improvement in the treatment of these diseases,” he said.
