(CNN) — Five suspects in the Memorial Day shooting that injured nine people near the lively Hollywood Beach boardwalk in South Florida are now in custody, police announced Monday.
Last week’s shooting began as a fight between two groups that ended in gunfire, injuring innocent bystanders on the busy boardwalk, including a 1-year-old boy, according to Hollywood police.
Among the suspects detained in the shooting are two minors under the age of 18.
A 15-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man were charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, eight counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of carrying a concealed firearm, according to police. .
The three new arrests are in addition to two others who were arrested immediately after the shooting.
The May 29 shooting sent people running down a palm-lined promenade that runs along the beach. Video of the incident showed people jumping into the arena as officers rushed to the scene.
Witnesses told officers that two large groups of people had gotten into an argument and one of them opened fire on the other, according to a police affidavit.
The document states that several people from one group “pulled out firearms and began firing indiscriminately not only at group 2, but also in the direction of innocent bystanders who were subsequently caught in the crossfire.”
Two of the people who were injured were part of one of the groups, one of whom was shot multiple times in the torso and the other in the right calf, according to the affidavit.
The other seven victims of the violence were innocent bystanders, according to the affidavit.
As of Monday, eight of the nine injured victims had been released from the hospital. One person remains hospitalized in stable condition, Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien said at a news conference.
Police officers who responded to the scene detained several people after the shooting, which led to the arrest of two men accused of possession of weapons, police said. But the search for others involved continued.
In the hours that followed, police obtained surveillance video capturing the altercation and authorities released photos of three other suspects asking for the public’s help in identifying them. Police received tips from the public and the three were arrested on Monday.
“No one wins when there is a crime in any community in the United States and certainly not here in the city of Hollywood,” Mayor Josh Levy said at a news conference a week after the shooting, praising the work of the department of police in identifying and arresting suspects.
