The director general of the Qatari Development Fund, Khalifa ben Jassem al-Qawari, and the outgoing Minister of Health, Hamad Hassan, yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding for the reconstruction of the old building of the public hospital of the Quarantine destroyed during the double explosion at the port on August 4, 2020. The event was held at the hospital’s headquarters in the presence of the Qatari ambassador, Mohammad Hassan Jaber al-Jaber, and the chairman of the council of administration of the hospital, Michel Matar.
“The reconstruction and complete re-equipment of the building are part of the fulfillment of the commitments made by Qatar after the explosion of the port of Beirut on August 4,” Khalifa ben Jassem al-Qawari said in a speech. “This agreement comes in the wake of Qatar’s humanitarian commitment and its fraternal ties of solidarity with Lebanon,” he added. In this context, the Qatari official emphasized his country’s commitment to “alleviate the losses of the Lebanese after the massive destruction of many buildings, and (to) overcome unprecedented economic and financial challenges”. He also referred to the hospital and medical aid that his country had provided immediately after the cataclysm (in particular the installation of field hospitals), revealing moreover that Qatar is working on the rehabilitation of more than 50 schools as well as three universities.
Speaking, Hamad Hassan for his part thanked Qatar for its support, noting that “the old hospital building is difficult to restore and requires demolition before being rebuilt”. “Thanks to the donation from Qatar, the new building should be ready within two years,” he said.
