Jakarta –
Six people convicted in the case narcotics type sabu-sabu weighing 402 kilograms which is packaged like a ball is declared to have escaped from death sentence. Members of the House of Representatives were surprised why the judge passed the convicts from the death penalty.
“For the extraordinary crime of drugs with such large evidence, the reduction in punishment carried out by the Bandung PT (High Court) is certainly quite surprising and raises a big question mark,” said Member of Commission III of the DPR RI Democratic Faction, Didik Mukrianto, to reporters on Saturday (26/26). /6/2021).
Didik said that the death penalty for drug offenders is not only to give the appropriate punishment or to provide a mere deterrent effect. No less important is to protect the community and save the nation’s children from the dangers of narcotics and illegal drug abuse.
“Indonesia is bound by the international convention on narcotics and psychotropic substances which has been ratified into national law in the Narcotics Law. Therefore, Indonesia is obliged to protect its citizens from the threat of international narcotics illicit trafficking networks, by applying effective and maximum punishments,” he said.
He said in the international convention, Indonesia had recognized narcotics crime as an extraordinary crime. So, he said, law enforcement needs special, effective and maximum treatment.
“One of the special treatments is by applying the death penalty,” he said.
According to Didik, although the independence of judges must be respected, the reduction in the sentence for drug crimes involving 402 kg of methamphetamine can disturb the common sense and logic of the public. He said that the destructive power of 402 kg of methamphetamine was inconceivable to our nation’s generation.
“An unforgivable crime. There is still a step by the Prosecutor to appeal. For justice and to protect the interests of a larger generation, the Prosecutor must appeal,” he said.
Didik asked the public to monitor every judge’s behavior. If the public sees that the judge’s behavior is inappropriate, let alone is proven to tolerate crime or even participate in crimes including drug crimes, the public can report it to the authorities or to the Judicial Commission.
“In addition, I hope that the Judicial Commission will continue to carry out intensive and continuous supervision of judges who have the potential to behave deviantly,” he said.
