A member of the far-right American organization Proud Boys shouted “Trump won!” as he left the courtroom in Washington. Dominic Pezzola was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the attack on the US Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, Reuters reported, citing BTA.
Pesola did not play a leadership role in the group and was the only one of the five defendants to be acquitted of the charge of conspiracy against the state. He has been convicted of other crimes, including obstructing public officials and assaulting law enforcement officers.
“You personally played a significant role in the events of that day,” U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly said before handing down a sentence that was half the sentence sought by prosecutors. “What happened was a national disgrace.”
Kelly pointed out that as a new member of the group, Pesola was acquitted of conspiracy but held accountable for his other actions.
Defendant Ethan Nordein, the group’s leader, who was convicted of conspiracy and other crimes, is expected to be sentenced later today. Yesterday, Judge Kelly sentenced two other former Proud Boys leaders, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rell, to 17 and 15 years in prison, respectively.
Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, following a speech in which the Republican claimed his defeat in the November 2020 election was the result of massive fraud.
