Meloni with scientists to “reopen the dialogue”, then relaunches nuclear power: “A great prospect for clean energy”

“A great perspective, a great vision, a great dream derive from the possibility of producing clean and unlimited energy from nuclear fusion in a not so distant future. Italy is the homeland of Enrico Fermi, in this regard it is second to none” . The prime minister said it Giorgia Meloni speaking at the event “Science at the center of the State” promoted by the Italian Scientists Association.

“I consider this ‘Science Manifesto’ promoted by the Association of Italian Scientists to be an extremely valuable document, it contains many fundamental ideas for the work that politics must do” and “the government intends to capitalize on this document”, added the Prime Minister.

“I am absolutely convinced that it is necessary to put the dialogue between men and women of science and institutions back at the center, particularly given the times we are facing. It is a complex phase that requires study and analysis, an alliance between science and institutions is needed “.

In short, the prime minister calls for dialogue between the world of research and that of politics, indicating the latter guide through a series of quotes and examples, from the recent film on Oppenheimer to Karl Popper, from Pope John Paul II to Enrico Fermi. “We must all be united to guarantee a better future for our children and automatically for our country. Politics cannot do without science, and the scientist needs the political decision-maker to make his work available to all. On the one hand there is the objectivity of scientific data, on the other the choice and ethics of responsibility: the technical-scientific apparatus without political order and ethical principles risks falling into technocracy Politics and science – he then says recalling the words of the Polish Pontiff – are like faith and reason”.

The risks of artificial intelligence

Attention is paid above all to the potential of generative artificial intelligence which, says the Prime Minister, is opening up scenarios which we are called to deal with much more quickly than we are doing today: we were used to progress that had the objective of using human skills, but that process focused on replacing physical labor and this allowed man to elevate himself. Today it risks no longer being like this: what can be replaced today is the intellect and man risks finding himself in a world in which he is no longer at the center.”

In other words: “we are trading our freedom for convenience: I don’t want to say that it is a negative technology, but that without political contexts we risk arriving too late because political processes are increasingly slower. We will bring this issue to the G7, we must throw ourselves body and soul into algorithmics, give ethics to the algorithm and these are not matters that national states can tackle alone.”
