Frontman WELL UI Melki Sadek Huang took part in the demonstration with dozens of students from various regions in a free pulpit action in front of Solo City Hall, Monday (18/12) afternoon.

During the action, the participants held corn in their hands as a symbol of democracy which is still in its prime.

The action coordinator, Raafila Anbiya, stated that the corn was also a reminder that young democracy must be protected by all parties. Unfortunately, continued Raafila, democracy in Indonesia actually became weaker during President Joko Widodo’s leadership.

He touched on the involvement of Jokowi family members in the government. Especially his two sons, Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Kaesang Pangarep.

Gibran ran as vice presidential candidate in the 2024 elections alongside Prabowo Subianto after the Constitutional Court (MK) passed lawsuit number 90. As a result of this decision, the Honorary Council of the Constitutional Court (MKMK) removed the position of Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court from Anwar Usman, who is also Gibran’s uncle. He is considered to have allowed outside interference within the Constitutional Court.

“We see that year after year, leading up to today’s election, the Jokowi family wants to be in power. Yesterday there were rumors that Kaesang wanted to become governor of Central Java too,” he said.

During this action, students were supposed to invite Gibran to hear the criticism and aspirations they wanted to convey. Unfortunately, Gibran was not there at that time. He had left his office since this afternoon.

Raafila admitted that he was disappointed because Gibran was not present at the free pulpit held by students. In fact, according to him, Gibran should have used this moment to hear the aspirations of young people.

“Gibran claims to be a candidate representing Gen Z. We are disappointed that we didn’t respond, we didn’t attend to what we voted for today,” he said.

Meanwhile, Melki admitted that he took part in the action as a form of student solidarity. “Today I just joined the free platform initiated by BEM friends in Solo,” he said.

Melki added that Gibran’s absence showed that Gibran did not have good intentions for dialogue.

“Then the public can judge whether such a leader is democratic,” he said.

Later, after the action, Melki received notification on the same day that he had been temporarily dismissed from his position as Chair of BEM UI.

“I received the deactivation letter from BEM UI today. It was signed by the Deputy Chair. But as of today I have not followed any applicable process, whether at the Task Force or at BEM UI. There have been no summons,” said Melki on a separate occasion. to CNNIndonesia.comMonday (18/12).

Melki denied committing the alleged violation of sexual violence as uploaded by an account on X’s social media on Monday (18/12).

He feels that until now he has never violated any rules, especially those related to sexual violence.

Nevertheless, Melki explained that the deactivation effort was in accordance with applicable BEM UI regulations.

Melki admitted that he was ready to follow any process and provide any proof in this case.
