A lifelong educator with local roots

Avilés Ramos was born and raised in the Soundview section of the Bronx in New York City, the daughter of a single Puerto Rican mother. She is the first in her family to graduate from high school and the first in her family to go to college. Due to her own upbringing, underprivileged, she fought hard to create opportunity for students and families throughout New York City.

Avilés Ramos will provide extensive knowledge of the city’s public school system. She has served as a special education teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant principal and interim superintendent before moving to headquarters where she was instrumental in the development of “Project Open Arms,” ​​answer City Public Schools from New York to migrant families seeking asylum. Her efforts have included creating advisory boards, launching community projects, and leading initiatives that address critical issues that impact on students and their families.

Avilés Ramos began her career as an English teacher at Truman High School in 2007 before becoming principal at Schuylerville Preparatory High School, where she increased the graduation rate from 23 percent to 68 percent in her first year , and from 68 percent to 83 percent in their years. in the second year, and approximately 71 percent of English language learners are considered college ready.

She was then Executive Director of Program Implementation in the Office of the First Vice-Chancellor before becoming Chief of Staff to the Chancellor’s Banks, later progressing to her current role as Vice-Chancellor of Family and Community Engagement and External Affairs.

Avilés Ramos holds a Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University and a Master of Arts from CUNY City College. She is the mother of a girl.
