Meliá, Barceló, NH, Riu and Iberostar, among the 50 most powerful chains in the world | Hotel News

The large Spanish chains maintain a prominent position worldwide. According to the annual ranking produced by Hotels magazine, five Spanish firms (Meliá, Barceló, NH, Riu and Iberostar) are among the 50 most powerful on the planet by number of rooms and hotels. The top four positions are for Marriott, Jin Jiang International Holdings, Oyo Rooms and Hilton.

Meliá remains the leading Spanish chain, climbing one place over the previous year to nineteenth. It has 82,011 rooms in a total of 325 hotels. Only the French Accor, which is in seventh place, surpasses the group led by Gabriel Escarrer in Europe.

In position 29, two above the ranking of a year ago, appears Barceló. The Mallorcan chain has 57,493 rooms distributed among 251 hotels. NH completes the podium, which is in twenty-second position as it is integrated into the Thai Minor, which in 2018 took control of almost 100% of the Spanish chain.

Riu, the fourth Spanish chain, stars in a striking climb, going from position 38 to 32. It has 47,982 rooms and 99 hotels. It is followed by Iberostar in forty-seventh place with 35,700 seats and 104 establishments.

Other Spanish firms that appear in prominent places in the ranking, made up of a total of 300 companies, such as Eurostars, in position 67; H10 Hotel (87); Palladium (101); Piñero Group (103); and Catalonia (111).
