Melbourne Embraces Greek Language Heritage, Recognizing 38 New Scholars
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Thirty-eight individuals have earned recognition for their dedication to the Greek language, receiving the esteemed Certificate of Achievement in Greek presented by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM). This achievement not only reflects the growing commitment within Australia to preserve the richness of Greek culture but also highlights the globally recognized significance of this language qualification.
As the official testing center for the program in Victoria, GCM has witnessed a steady rise in participation, underscoring the increasing interest in exploring Greek language and heritage. The Certificate of Achievement in Greek stands as the sole Greek language credential formally recognized in Greece and across the wider European region.
“Consul General Emmanuel Kakavelakis commended the recipients, reminding us that "learning Greek holds immense cultural and personal significance," while GCM President Bill Papastergiadis emphasized the vital role the certificate plays in safeguarding Hellenic identity. He noted that language barriers can often create a disconnect between diaspora Greeks and their roots, making the certificate an important bridge to cultural continuity.
Deputy Consul Maria Triantafylou echoed these sentiments, praising the participants for their commitment and acknowledging that "the Greek language serves as a gateway to a world of cultural and literary treasures." Dr Nikos Dallas, head of GCM’s education programs, highlighted the numerous cognitive and cultural advantages of bilingualism, emphasizing its particular importance within Melbourne’s vibrant and diverse community.
Those interested in pursuing the prestigious Certificate of Achievement in Greek can submit their applications starting February 1, 2025, with the upcoming examinations scheduled for May
