Melatonin is a molecule that arose billions of years ago to help the first forms of life. In humans, it works like a neurohormone that regulates biorhythms, allowing you to better adapt to changes. Melatonin is produced in the human body in the “third eye” area, a part of the brain called the pineal gland or pineal gland. There it is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan, which is only supplied with food.
Smoking, alcohol and a disturbed daily routine reduce the production of melatonin, which in turn leads to an acceleration of the rate of aging and, in women, to the onset of menopause. What’s the relationship here? What are the benefits and harm of melatonin tablets? “Doctor Peter” was informed by Irina Bega, general practitioner, gerontologist and psychosomatologist.
