Melania Trump is for the right to abortion, she writes in her autobiography

Melania Trump, the wife of American Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, is a supporter of the right to abortion. Abortion ban is unpopular

The statements are remarkable because her husband Donald Trump, as president, ensured that the national right to abortion was abolished. That right was established in the US by the so-called Roe v. Wade ruling, a 1973 Supreme Court ruling. In 2022, the same Supreme Court – including three judges appointed by Trump – decided to annul the ruling.

Since then, fourteen states have almost completely banned abortion, often in extreme cases, such as after rape or incest. The abortion ban is unpopular in the US: according to pollster Pew Research finds nearly two-thirds of Americans say abortion should be legal.

Melania Trump, who rarely showed up at her husband’s side during the presidential campaign, also belongs to this group. “Limiting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is like denying her control over her own body,” she writes. “I have had this belief my entire adult life.”
