The Mekong River has plunged to a worrisome level after China holds water in its upstream dam.
The Mekong River Commission (MRC) issued a statement calling on the Chinese authorities to share all dam water data with the Mekong countries. And revealed that Water in the Mekong River is declining to an alarming level, in part because China’s dams in the upstream hold the water. The commission also urged China to share all water data.
The Mekong River Commission also revealed that The Mekong River, when it flows through the Thai-Lao border, changes color from muddy brown to blue. This is a sign that water levels are declining and a lack of mineral-rich sediment. This is partly due to the detention of the Jinghong Dam in China’s Yunnan Province.
The statement said Low rainfall and dams on the lower Mekong and its tributaries all contribute to the decrease in water levels in the Mekong. If China releases water from the dam, the water level may be normal.
The US-sponsored Mekong Dam Monitor, which uses data from water level satellites, revealed that Began to notice fluctuations in water levels released from Jinghong Dam since February.
Chinese authorities have pledged to share dam water data with the lower Mekong countries including Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
In January, China said it would collect water into the dam’s reservoir. By releasing water will return to normal on Jan. 25.
The Mekong River Commission said in early January the past. China releases water from Jinghong dam at 785 cubic meters per second Before increasing to 1,400 cubic meters per second in the middle
However, in February, China reduced water emissions again until Feb.11, down to 800 cubic meters per second.
