Meitingen invests 10 million euros. After the “House for Children”, a “House of Music and Culture” is now being built in the north-west of the community.

Even if in the market Meitingen Groundbreaking is currently almost the order of the day, in times of increasing corona infection numbers, the question of masks and distances must first be clarified before those involved can take action. “We have waited a long time for this day,” said Mayor Michael Higl, pleased that after the “House for Children”, the starting shot has now been given for a “House of Music and Culture” on both sides of the Sun Splash outdoor pool in the southwest of Meitingen could.

Home for cultural activities in the Meitinger “House of Music and Culture”

“What do you do with the old cinema?” Those in charge of the Meitingen market had dealt with this question for a long time after the building already owned by the municipality had been vacant since the opening of the new multiplex cinema of the Rusch family. Now the solution has been found and on the way. In the former Meitinger cinema Cinderella, the furniture of which was auctioned off almost exactly three years ago, film melodies will be heard again in the future. As a rule, these are part of the repertoire of brass bands that are to have their home there in the summer of next year in a “house for music and culture”. “With the ‘House of Music and Culture’ a new center is being created that will give the diverse musical and cultural activities in our community a new home,” said Higl. The premises also offer opportunities for choirs and ensembles, theater associations or school music projects.

Home game for the site manager: “I grew up with this cinema”

Simon Forster is particularly looking forward to the next few months. The construction manager of the Günzburg company Bendl has practically a home game. “I grew up with this cinema,” reveals the 36-year-old Thierhauptenwho has seen many films at the Cinderella. He remembers one thing in particular: cool runnings. “I was sitting all alone with a friend in the big cinema.” That won’t happen in the future. After the first analyzes, it became clear that various rooms will be more than fully occupied, so that the decision was made to add an extension with additional rooms.

This extension on the east side of the existing building is to contain a multi-purpose room “in which all other artists can also find a home,” said Mayor Higl. The special thing about it is a large glass front, so that you can also hold open-air concerts. “Johann Hölzl succeeded with flying colors in the difficult task of taking into account the different wishes, needs and suggestions of the various associations and groups”, Higl thanked the architect from Thierhaupten.

250,000 euros in-house contribution by the Meitinger music associations

“Here the opportunities were optimally exploited and the existing building fabric used,” stated MdL Georg Winter (CSU). For Fabian Mehring, Meitinger’s local councilor and member of the state parliament, who is an absolute fan of the cinema, the project is a very special one, “because it demonstrates the community spirit in the town.” Mayor Higl was also delighted that the two music associations involved, the SGL band and the youth wind orchestra, are actively pulling together and will contribute significantly to the realization of this showcase project with 250,000 euros of their own contribution. In addition, the two music associations, which together have around 600 members and whose current accommodation was no longer up-to-date and no longer economically viable, are responsible for the design and equipment of the rehearsal, storage and lounge rooms and bear additional costs. “When clearing the building, it gave one or the other the first serious sore muscles,” joked the mayor, who always held the youth councils in the old cinema. “The questions were pretty tight because everyone wanted to see the film as quickly as possible,” he recalls.

The cost estimate for the “House of Music and Culture” is around 4.3 million euros. This includes the value of the property and the property, which are already owned by the market municipality, as well as the planning and ancillary costs. As part of the “Socially Integrative City” urban development subsidy, grants of 1,500,000 euros were approved, made up of funds from the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria in equal parts. For the “House of the Children”, in which six groups will be accommodated, the total costs are estimated at 5.6 million euros. The construction project is funded by the Free State of Bavaria (a total of 3,194,000 euros) and the Federal Republic of Germany (236,919 euros).
