Meiland Family Fails at Interviewing: A Critical Review by RTL Boulevard Editor Tim van Rodijnen

RTL Boulevard editor Tim van Rodijnen (28) reads and writes about the world of Dutch television and entertainment. In Tele-visie Tim he writes down what hits, surprises and moves him.

“Somehow it reassured me that maybe there was less writing in Meiland’s show than I thought. “

The Meiland family has proven that interviewing is a profession Chateau Meiland VIPS. And that it is a role they are not mastering has been very clear in the past eight weeks on Monday night on SBS6. Week after week, the cheerful family received two Dutch celebrities in their Noordwijk guest house, but there were few high-level conversations.

I found the worst example in the program in which Berget Lewis and Gordon were guests. There, mater familias Erica asked the daughter Maxime what she would like to get out of Berget. She then casually replied that she would like to know how old Berget is. That thought surprised me and I don’t know how to put it into words here. Because of what the… answer. Somehow it reassured me that there might be less writing in Meiland’s show than I thought. Otherwise, as a producer you would hope to say: ‘Gosh, Maxime. We’ll do this again.’

After this comment from Maxime, Erica said that she would like to know how Berget lost so much weight. Not original either, but hey, better question. The joke, however, is that she doesn’t ask the singer about it at all. Shoot me.

The Meilandjes hardly seem to be able to read. This was already evident in the first episode, when they did not know that John the Beaver has hearing problems. As a result, all conversations are still a little on the surface. This is how it is with Gordon about his turbulent love life, with Patty Brard about cosmetic procedures and in the last episode on Monday night with Miljuschka Witzenhausen about food and weight, leading to several conversations that we have seen many times before.

I understand that people enjoy watching Martien, Erica, Maxime and Montana. They’re also funny in their own way at times, if you’re not turned off by the constant constant screaming yet. It is also good to clear your mind and laugh with the family. It can also be seen in the viewing figures, as they continue to attract audiences of millions. But the Meilandjes have to do where their strength lies. Let them renovate a house or move, but not this. Other people can do better at interviewing.

It seems that the Meiland family is also going to stick to their own rules, because last month it was announced that Martien and Erica put their town up for sale after only three years. This also means that they will be looking for a new home and that is undoubtedly food for a new season of Chateau Meiland. Let’s hope they don’t invite celebrities to help out.
