The issue of Kate’s manipulated photo continues to occupy the front pages of all British newspapers, and becomes the reason for a new clash between the two most popular couples in the royal family: the Princes of Wales and the Dukes of Sussex. While commentators wonder why Kensington Palace does not want to release the original photo of Kate and her children, i.e. the shot taken by William and modified by his wife on Saturday 9 March, the evening before Mother’s Day, some sources close to the Sussexes agree to speak with the gossip magazine Page Six to underline that “Meghan would never have made the same mistake as Kate.” The reason? Simple: “Because Meghan is a control freak.” In short, the princess’s mistake becomes the starting point for a new distant clash between the Windsor brothers and their respective wives, with American and British newspapers lined up in support of one or the other.
Because Meghan would never have made the same mistake as Kate
We stay at Page Six: the anonymous source who defined the duchess control freakexplained her obsession with controlling the images that portray her and her family by giving some examples: “(Meghan) Always wants the last word, as happened when it came to editing the shots for Vogue” , she said, referring to when, in 2019, she was asked to guest edit the September issue of British Vogueby title Forces For Change which reportedly exasperated the magazine’s staff. Furthermore, it is known that Meghan has always wanted to personally manage the dissemination of images of her family, refusing to submit to the Palace’s routine procedure which involves releasing images through photographic agencies such as Associated Press and Reuters, to post them herself on the social profile that then he ran @sussexroyal together with Harry, keeping the copyright for himself.
So: unlike Kate, Meghan would never have posted a clumsily manipulated photograph. Also because, if it had ever happened to her, or her prince husband, to make a similar mistake with Photoshop, the public would not have been as forgiving: “the Sussexes would have been destroyed”.
The response of Kate’s defenders
Comments in defense of the Princess of Wales they don’t wait. “Let him recover”, thunder the commentators of the main British newspapers. “It’s time to move beyond the editing error, an unfortunate but not sinister event,” asks Emiliy Ferguson fromExpresswhile some friends paint Kate as “heartbroken” over this Photoshop story: “She’s recovering well and will be back by Easter, but she needs to be left alone.”
Then, there are those who go on the counteroffensive: the royal expert Angela Levindirector of Majestic magazine, who from the columns of Sun takes the floor for calling Harry and Meghan “hypocrites” because they too, in the past, would have released a manipulated photo: “In their photograph a tree was edited to create a special background, so how dare they say anything about Catherine’s?” says the expert. Without taking into account the fact that the Dukes did not speak out against the princess. The image Levin is referring to is the one taken by London photographer Misan Harriman, their friend, in 2021, to announce Meghan’s second pregnancy. He himself had told how he had edited the black and white photo, speaking on the Private Passions podcast on BBC Radio 3: “It’s incredible what you can do with technology”, he said, explaining that the photo had been taken remotely since it was in the middle of the pandemic. He had used technology to communicate with the Sussexes, telling them how to pose. “They weren’t actually under a willow tree, were they?” the podcast host had urged him, “They were on a simple lawn”. And Harriman: “Yes, they were lost in their love, at home, in their garden, at ease while experiencing a moment of joy.”
So, athat photo of Harry and Meghan had also been manipulated, albeit in a professional manner, without leaving any errors. And she’s not the only one either.
Harry, Meghan, and the “photoshop-gate” of Archie’s portrait
In seeking a solution to the mess that arose from the publication of Kate’s photo and the Palace’s inability to manage the case to prevent it from turning into a boomerang capable of significantly undermining the credibility of the royal family, some suggest that William and Kate should behave just like Harry and Meghan did in dealing with their “photoshop-gate”when they were accused of altering the 2019 Christmas card.
The shot showed the couple sitting on the ground near the Christmas tree while Archie, who was just over six months old at the time, was portrayed in extreme close-up as he leaned towards the camera with a curious expression. Some immediately noticed that something about that photo wasn’t right, because Meghan’s face was in perfect focus, even though she was in the back of the photo. Especially since Harry’s face, on the other hand, was rather blurry. The idea of the couple’s detractors was that the shot had been edited to highlight the duchess.
The photo had not been released through official channels, but first appeared on an unverified X account called The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust. A friend of Meghan’s, Janina Gavankar, had come forward, saying that she had taken the photo and posting the original on her Instagram account: “I’m so proud to have taken the Christmas photo for one of my best friends and for his family”.
William and Kate, therefore, should do the same thing: shut down any speculation regarding this story sharing the original photo, or the shot taken by the prince with his Canon without any modification. The Palace is under increasing pressure in this regard and the “ceasefire” will probably depend on this decision which would allow the princess to calmly continue the period of convalescence after abdominal surgery which, we remember, will end with Easter.
