The Duke and Duchess of Sussex discussed the dangers to children online in their first formal interview since their conversation with Oprah Winfrey three years ago. In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, the couple talked about their experiences as parents: they just want to protect “their son Archie and their daughter Lilibet”.

Prince Harry said it was “one of the scariest things” to know any parent could lose a child to suicide as a result of being exposed to harmful content from social media posts. The duo recently launched a new program called The Parents Networkwhich supports parents and carers affected by this issue.

In their interview with Oprah, Prince Harry and Meghan discussed topics such as racism and life in the royal family. Their intentions to tackle online vandalism were at the heart of the conversation. “Our children are young, three and five years old, they are wonderful, but as a parent you just want to protect them,” said Meghan.

Prince Harry said that it has reached a stage where almost every parent has to be a ‘first responder’. “But even the best first responders in the world wouldn’t be able to recognize the signs of suicide,” he said.

Dark thoughts

The two also talked about their mental health. “Hope to help others.” Prince Harry, whose mother Diana died at the age of 12, has opened up about the impact grief has had on his mental health and continues to have.

Meghan, previously known as an actress in the series Suits, revealed in the much-discussed interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that things were so bad for her for a while that she didn’t want to live anymore. She would also not be allowed to seek help from the palace.

“If talking about my recovery could save someone, or encourage someone in their life to look out for someone and not automatically assume that someone is going to be okay, it’s worth it,” Meghan said.

The 43-year-old duchess had suicidal thoughts when she was pregnant with Archie. She found life as a royal very difficult, especially the way she was treated by the British media.
