Senior members of the royal family left “hidden signs” in their birthday messages to Meghan Markle, according to a royal expert.
The Duchess of Sussex was inundated with birthday wishes from the royal family the year she and Prince Harry decided to leave royal working life.
Despite the tensions, the Queen, Prince William and Kate Middleton put aside differences to wish Meghan a happy 39th birthday in 2004.
The Queen was the first to post a congratulatory message on social media before the Cambridges and Prince Charles and Camilla followed suit.
However, Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, believes there was much more to the posts than a brief message of well wishes.

Ms Seward believes the Queen and other royals know how “sensitive Meghan is” and made sure to congratulate her despite the feud.
The Queen’s team posted a photo of the Duchess of Sussex smiling with Her Majesty at a joint event in 2018 in Chester with a message that read: “Wishing the Duchess of Sussex a very Happy Birthday!”
Mrs Seward said: “I’m sure Meghan’s first reaction will be ‘what a nice gesture’, then she might consider it just part of the royal machine that she and Harry hate so much.”

“We’ll probably never know, but I hope it’s just the first thing.”
Kate and William later posted on their Kensington Royal Instagram account: “Wishing the Duchess of Sussex a very happy birthday today!”
The post featured an image of a delighted Meghan holding hands with a young student and they ended their message with a birthday cake emoji and a balloon emoji.

Prince Charles and Camilla also posted on their Clarence House social media accounts simply saying, “Happy Birthday to the Duchess of Sussex!”
Ms Seward thinks the fact that Kate and William posted shows how “sassy” the Duchess of Cambridge is with the couple.
She said: “She’s a sassy lady and she wouldn’t consider letting anyone, least of all Meghan’s many supporters, hit her.”
Prince Charles and Camilla also posted a photo of Meghan smiling, along with a birthday message for the Duchess.
