Meghan Markle to Miss Coronation of Carlos III: The Controversy Surrounding the Absence of the Duchess of Sussex and Her Children

She will go down in history as Meghan, the absent one. And it is that Meghan Markle will not finally attend the coronation of Carlos III. Buckingham Palace announced this week that Prince Harry will be present at Westminster Abbey on May 6. However, The Duchess of Sussex and her children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – will stay in California. The title thing is something they insist on a lot. Because it is one thing to cut ties with the Royal Family and quite another to miss the opportunity for their children, grandchildren of the monarch, to become princes. The truth is that the Montecito couple knew for months that she and her children were not going to travel to London. But they have wanted to wait to make the announcement when there are barely two weeks left and maintain control.

There are many theories that are being considered about the commented absence of the former actress. In the controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey – the same one in which she accused the Royal Family of racism – she assured that “the most important title” she would ever have “is mom’s”. Therefore, some consider that she would not have felt comfortable missing her eldest son’s fourth birthday.

But this falls under its own weight since the children could have perfectly had a role in the Coronation ceremony. Camilla’s own grandchildren – who do not share royal blood with Carlos III – are going to be as pages, so the absence of Harry’s children is not much understood.

The Sussexes Defenders –that there still are– assure that the decision has been made so as not to “overshadow” what Harry described as the most important day in his father’s life. As recent royal history has shown, the Sussexes only grudgingly played second fiddle when Queen Elizabeth II conducted the orchestra. But now it is Carlos III who has the baton.

During the June celebrations to mark the sovereign’s 70 years on the throne, the Sussexes were only seen – in secondary row – at the mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The already mythical appearance with William and Kate was most forced. The relationship between brothers –and not to say sisters-in-law– was non-existent and with the premiere of the documentary and Harry’s memories at the beginning of the year, any hope of reconciliation was killed.. Although, on the other hand, it has always been known that an absence in itself can become the best marketing strategy.
