Meghan Markle is “43% Nigerian”. The Duchess of Sussex, 41, studied her family history of her “a couple of years ago” and found that she actually has strong ties to the West African country.
Speaking with Nigerian-American star Ziwe on her “Archetypes” podcast, Meghan explained: “I did my genealogy a couple of years ago, I’m 43% Nigerian.”
Ziwe responded by asking Meghan if she knew anything more concrete about her past: “Are you serious? This is huge. Igbo, Yoruba, do we know?”
The Duchess – who has three-year-old Prince Harry Archie and 16-month-old Lilibet with Prince Harry – added: “I’ll start digging deeper into all of this because everyone I have told this to, especially Nigerian women, are like, ‘What?’ “
Meanwhile, the former actress had previously revealed that she “began to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman” only when she started dating Harry.
The Duchess made the confession during a podcast with music star Mariah Carey, also “of mixed race”.
“She had read an article about Halle Berry and in it she was asked how she felt about being treated like a mixed race woman. And her response was, ‘Well, your experience in the world is how people see you.’ . She said because she’s darker in color, they treated her like a black woman, not a mixed-race woman. And I think it’s very different to us because we have fair skin. They don’t treat you like a black woman. They don’t treat you like a black woman. they treat you like a white woman, in a way you are somewhere in between.
Finally, Meghan added, “I mean, if there was ever a time in my life where he was more focused on my race, it was when I started dating my husband. I started to understand what it was like to be. treated like a black woman. Because until then I had been treated like a mixed woman. And things have really changed. “
