Meghan and Harry ‘couldn’t be further’ from the ‘loyal’ royal picture
According to one royal author, Meghan and Harry’s approach to royal life “couldn’t be further” than that of Princess Anne and Sophia, Countess of Wessex.
According to Pauline Maclaran, co-author of Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture, she claims that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in direct contrast to Sophie Wessex and Princess Anne.
maclaren said Express.es: “Both Sophie Wessex and Princess Anne have been staunchly loyal in their service to the Queen and both hold a dignified position in the public eye.
“Both have had reputation problems in the past. Sophie had to deal with the “fake sheikh” scandal and Princess Anne divorced Mark Phillips.
“However, they now have both carved images and traditional royal women who are conscientious in their duties and careful not to embarrass the monarchy.
“Their brand images couldn’t be further removed from the maverick brand Sussex aimed at Generation Z.
“Princess Anne and Sophie Wessex manage to avoid controversy because they better understand the requirements of the job and are more willing to sacrifice their own personalities in the service of the Queen.
“Meghan and Harry have been much more enthusiastic about making sure to show their own identities, even when it has been deemed inappropriate (Oprah’s interview etc) and they are clearly trying to build their own brand, which Princess Anne and Sophie are not. . .”
