Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Failed Ventures in the Entertainment Industry

Amid rumors and contradictions of a possible breakup between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the couple has been trying to break into the entertainment industry, after leaving the British royal family.

Although some media, such as ‘US Weekly’, have said that Markle would also be interested in starting some retribution and philanthropy projects, but they have not yet decided, especially due to the rain of failures they have had in the last year.

Many of these projects with platforms like Netflix or Spotify started working very well, but over time the themes stopped being of interest, some ideas began to remain in the air and that caused the contracts they had closed to be dissolved, leaving the couple in limbo, since Prince Harry’s dream is that, to create content of global interest, but he has not achieved it so far.

The first of them to fail was the ‘Archetypes’ podcast. After releasing several episodes, it was not possible to continue it. This aimed to investigate, dissect and subvert the labels that limit women’s progress.

The talk show featured well-known figures such as Mariah Carey and Serena Williams, however it did not achieve the expected audience. Therefore, the million-dollar agreement with the brand, led by Meghan Markle and in collaboration with her husband, Prince Harry, was paused.

“We thought there needed to be innovation here. “We thought we could offer a great experience that would make consumers happy and allow new creators new avenues,” Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, revealed to the BBC after the decision.

Later, it was the Netflix docuseries that didn’t wow. After signing a contract with the streaming platform, Harry and Meghan created a series titled with their names, ‘Harry & Meghan’, which also did not achieve the expected result, despite the fact that it had unpublished material from the couple, such as images of their marriage, intimate moments, did not manage to be in the ranking of the most viewed content on the page.

According to Angela Levin, a royal expert, the couple felt “very unstable” with the failure of the product and it destabilized them, “not having been able to get an Emmy nomination shocked them and added to the list of things that went wrong for them.” evil”.

But this was not the only audiovisual content that did not achieve the expected results. The same thing happened with the documentary miniseries ‘Heart of Invictus’, produced by Archewell Productions and executive produced by Harry, following military service competitors who suffered life-changing injuries or illnesses on their way to the ‘Invictus Games.’

Although critics appreciated a good part of the stories and the objective of this production, it was strongly criticized by the public when they perceived that instead of knowing the true protagonists, it ended up focusing on the life of Harry, who is in the crosshairs. of justice of the United States; He could get into trouble over a visa, making him the protagonist.

Then came ‘Pearl’, an animated series that would focus on highlighting influential women in history, but a few months after Netflix approved the idea and the project, it was put on pause, while the platform reformulates and curates its animated section, given the high costs that generating content in that format is having for the industry.

Then the couple wanted to explore the topic of mental health, taking advantage of their interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. So they created the series The Me You Can’t See’ for Apple TV+, which featured testimonies from Oprah, Harry and others well-known figures such as Lady Gaga, Glenn Close and Zak Williams, the son of the late actor Robin Williams.

The production also sought to give prominence to those who were behind the scenes in the world of entertainment, such as the case of the Oscar winner, Asif Kapadia and the documentary filmmaker Dawn Porter, portraying those testimonies with great sensitivity. Although it was the most solid production that Harry undertook, its revelations (many of them already known) only overshadowed other stories.
