Meghan and Harry would ‘change focus’ on Jubilee, says Sacerdoti
And Jonathan Sacerdoti believes that the Sussexes’ decision to pressure world leaders on coronavirus vaccines is motivated by a determination to stay in the limelight. The royal couple wrote to world leaders who attended the G20 summit in Rome over the weekend urging them to make good on their commitment to send COVID-19 vaccines to low-income countries.
Sacerdoti, a regular Sky News commentator and contributor to The Spectator, said: “I think it was significant in terms of time, in the same way that everything Meghan and Harry do is significant in terms of time.
“Which means that they will not miss a single opportunity for attention and publicity and I believe that COP26 is one of those opportunities.”
He told Express.co.uk: “The Royal Family was meant to be there in force.
“Of course, the Queen regrettably had to cancel her appearance and speech at the inauguration, but the fact that the Royal Family devoted so much effort to the conference shows how important it was not only for them but for the country.
“And I think Meghan and Harry would have felt very left out and that’s probably one of the moments where they would have missed the most on the side of the royal duties that comes with being a working royal.”

While the couple may have felt “liberated” after leaving their royal lives and moving to California, Sacerdoti suggested there are elements they miss.
He said: “Presumably, being a cause that they want to be seen supporting will be one of those opportunities they could lose.
“So they haven’t missed it, they’ve put their names on this letter.”
Regarding his call to send doses of the jab to low-income countries where only three percent of the population has been vaccinated, Mr. Sacerdoti said: “I wondered about that letter.
“I’m sorry to be cynical, but I understand why the director of the World Health Organization [WHO] you could be writing about vaccines to world leaders.

“But for the life of me I couldn’t figure out in what capacity and in what capacity Meghan and Harry are giving advice on vaccines to world leaders.”
When, for example, Tony Blair offered advice on vaccine strategy, he did so as a former prime minister, while Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus spoke in his capacity as WHO director general, Mr. Sacerdoti noted.
He added: “With Meghan and Harry, we’re talking about someone who used to open boxes on Deal or No Deal and appear on a legal soap opera, and someone who was born into the British Royal Family and managed to get me not. I think very stellar results in your science education as a schoolboy.
“So I can’t understand why these two in particular are commenting on these matters.”

Mr. Sacerdoti admitted: “I don’t think many of us necessarily disagree with the cause they are raising. I think the idea of vaccinating most of the world against COVID-19 is, of course, admirable. .
“And I think that standing up for those in countries where they don’t have a successful vaccination plan like we do here in the UK or in other developed countries is of course a worthy cause and a worthwhile effort to make.
“But I don’t see how those two particular people making the case are going to do anything other than invite you to make fun of them.
“I don’t think that cause is going to progress any further than only the WHO and other more compelling world leaders who have authority on this issue would have. They have no authority in this matter.

To complicate matters, Mr. Sacerdoti also emphasized that even if they had been invited to attend COP26, it would have been difficult for Meghan and Harry to do so in any case.
He said: “The nature of a climate conference is such that people will have to travel to it from all over the world and that in itself will of course have a negative carbon effect.
“So maybe Meghan and Harry have thought of that. Did they need to be there as urgently as other people if they had planned to try and get there in the first place?
“And whether or not that would have been part of the calculation, I just don’t know.

“But they have certainly been criticized so much for the use of private jets when they have presented themselves as eco-warriors and advocates of saving the planet and the environment.”
In their letter to the G20 leaders shared via their Archewell website, signed by both together with Dr. Ghebreyesus, Meghan and Harry said: “We understand that the recovery from the pandemic is nuanced and deeply complex, but we have a window. an opportunity to come together as a global community and deliver on our humanitarian promises.
“By delivering the doses already promised, helping countries manufacture their own vaccines, and prioritizing vaccines for nations in need, the G20 can help ensure that the world delivers on these promises.”
