“Megalithic Monuments in Serpa: Municipality Collects Data with Regional Collaboration”

News

The Municipality of Serpa is collecting data on the megalithic monuments in the municipality. This action takes place in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo, following the classification process of Alentejo Megalithism.

The work consists of relocating the monuments and measuring various technical information, such as the state of conservation, accesses or threats, and scientific information, such as the description of the monuments. This phase succeeds the desk tasks, which made it possible to define the final list of monuments from each municipality to be included in the classification process.

In the case of Serpa, a set of nine monuments are referenced, spread over the parishes of Vila Nova de São Bento and Vale de Vargo, Salvador and Santa Maria, Brinches and Vila Verde de Ficalho.

The European Day of Megalithic Culture is celebrated on April 30, promoted by the Council of Europe, under the theme “Megalithism – Past and Present”. On that day, visit the Municipal Museum of Archeology to find out more about this important heritage related to prehistoric communities, expressed in the construction of dolmens or dolmens, menhirs and other monuments.
